American Sign Language, (often shortened to ASL), is a distinct, separate language from English and incorporates movements of the hands, face and body to convey linguistic meaning. ASL is used primarily in the deaf community in the United States and the predominately English speaking parts of Canada. Other countries have their own unique sign language and/or dialect.
In many universities, colleges, and community colleges ASL is taught as a foreign language for credit. It is estimated that there are a half a million speakers of ASL in the United States.
