Who was Cicero? Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC-43BC) was a Roman politician, philosopher, lawyer, author, and orator (speaker). He was a relentless supporter of Roman Republic and was called the pater patriae (father of the country) by his fellow Romans for his service to Rome.
His speeches were so powerful that when Mark Antony had him assassinated (for his anti-Antony speeches), he had him beheaded and his hands cut off; the hands and head were nailed to the Rostra (a public platform in Rome where speakers would deliver their speeches). Fulvia, Antony’s wife, pulled out his tongue from his decapitated head and stabbed it with her hairpin.
In modern times Cicero is considered the greatest Roman speaker and the founder of Ciceronian rhetoric.
