Informative Speech: Types

  • Objects: Speeches that focus on objects typically detail people, places, or things. As long as the object exists in the world, speakers can focus their speech on it. (Topic Examples: Abraham Lincoln, Stonehenge, saxophone)
  • Process: Speeches about processes can be demonstrative in nature; however, it is not required. The speaker does not need to physically show the audience each step in the process; instead, it can be just a verbal overview. (Topic Examples: How to fill out a job application, bake a cake, carve a pumpkin, change oil in a car)
  • Event: Speeches that revolve around events detail what has happened, is happening, or will happen, providing the details of the occurrence. (Topic Examples: Civil War, presidential election, 2024 Olympics)
  • Concepts: Speeches on concepts are much more abstract than other types. Whereas object, process, and event speeches focus on concrete details, concept speeches revolve around abstractions such as beliefs, ideologies, and philosophies. (Topic Examples: Human rights, freedom, morality, love)
